Multiplayer Communication
Can someone shine some light in here? The communication in Multiplayer: is it like a proximity voicechat (which range? 5km?) The dispatchers are able to select numbers to dial in and call, is that a working feature now? When I'm stuck on a red as a driver, can I directly call my responsible dispatcher instead of talking into the proximity(?) chat?

From what i understand the dispachers can communicate by telephone between adjacent posts. The trains can talk to dispatchers and other trains by using the radio. There is no "voice chat" in game, but a radio simulation. If you want to read more on how it works there is a part on the communications in the in-game dispachers manual.

Further, to make sure you actually receive contact with the person you want to talk to, first say the name of the one you are looking for once or twice, then "this is", then your own name (or train number) to get rid of confusion.

I see, so its not exactly like in reality where a dispatcher dials in the train number on his phone and actually only calls that specific train

I don't actually know how they do in real life and think it differs between different railroads. I can guess they still use radio and something like Digital Selective Call for ships. Or they have a cellphone for each train.

In poland it doesn't work this way. We don't have GSM-R (yet) so communication is universal via channels. Ingame, the radio has a range of 15-20km.

Alright, I was thinking it was GSM-R. So basically SimRail reflects the reality then.

GSM-R is a bit of a meme in Poland. Every time we're a year until "the deadline" for GSM-R keeps being delayed every time it's about a year until. The current deadline is 2025, but it's just been a constant delay after delay chain for like 8 years.

Oh don't worry, here in Germany we wanted to introduce the "Deutschlandtakt" some kind of rework of the nationwide long distance network... They wanted to introduce it by 2030 or something, now they're realized that thats not gonna happen and its been delayed to...

Strap yourself in...
