How is this different from just using a source port?

rottexpr is the state of the art when it comes to current ports. It fixes a lot of the pain points from the Icculus port it's based on and it's definitely better than the WinROTT ones.

Even then, it lacks multiplayer, is hard-capped at 35 FPS and for some reason is set up to mix audio at 11025 kHz like it's 1994 (though the latter is an easy fix).

i just play the dos original most of the time. an old dos machine, if you can find one locally, would cost you maybe $50. but just the sheer amount of quality of life improvements, the new content, the fact that it's multiplat. more than enough on offer to make it an instant buy for me.

After taking the demo for a quick spin... this is the best that ROTT has *ever* felt to play. Absolutely a necessary release after years and years of not-quite-there source ports and even the pure original. I won't be surprised if even Extreme ROTT is fun in this version, lol.

Yes, this is currently the best ROTT port by far! I loved the demo level from the new episode, too.
