For a long time told me 0% had the "I" developer ball, when I got it the number jumped to 2%. Im sure there arent only 50 people playing the game for that jump to be all me so something must be off with those %
Timezones :)
People use cheats. It seems like that disables achievements for the rest of the campaign moving forward. I've beaten Sebastian Krist in the Hun Continues, but haven't gotten the achievement. I activated fly mode once because I couldn't find the way forward in one stage. That's probably why.
If all it takes is for a player to use cheats to pick a different music track, man... I'll probably never get the rest of them. I always use that feature! I mean, cheat.
ROTT has a lot of novelty. That's what people played it for, and multiplayer. If you ever beat the singleplayer, it was because you didn't have anything better to do. The shareware campaign was enjoyable enough, but the full game was a slog. The level design was only visually better than wolf3d, and you did get a map, but the secret hunting was tedious. The enemies and level design was pure masochism. You got that boss that doesn't die, and runs on a timer. Pretty much requires a walkthrough to beat the game. Do we even have modern walkthroughs available for it? Probably not. If people even get to the boss, they won't know what to do, and quit the game.
You also have the obtuse score system. Did you know you get points for destroying all the pickups and killing enemies without the guns (rockets only)? How exactly are you "supposed" to play it? It's a schizophrenic mess of a game that's pure masochism.
What QOL improvements does this remaster even offer? Is there better balancing?
Did you know Quake2 just released it's remaster FREE for Quake2 owners? The news of this alone destroys any PR momentum ROTT had, while Ludicrous cost more than the original or 2013 remake which was more fun. Quake2 is not even a hard game, but it's remaster includes a COMPASS to point you to the next objective, not to mention tons of actually good new content.
I don't expect the completion rate to ever beat Boltgun. The marketing is overshadowed by Quake 2. Everyone being "positive" about ROTT are the hardcore fan minority of users who played the original and don't admit the game's flaws. Except they look at the completion rate and ask "WHYYY" when the answer is obvious and staring them in the face. You can't slap a resolution bump on ROTT and pretend that fixes the game, if anything increased resolution shows the flaws more. There's no midi. Keyboard rebinding existed with the DOS version. Return of the Triad is also a FREE Doom mod. It's not exclusive content. You can get the majority of improvements (resolution) with a source port. Plus if cheating disables achievements, well, lol. You're gonna be lucky to hit 5% by next year.
/Shows how many people actually played the whole thing.
Yeah. Ludicrous gibs. Remote ridicule taunts.
But nobody remembers the boss. Wonder why? Probably because everyone played the shareware, never beat the actual full game, and still won't with a remaster.
Do it. Play the whole thing without cheating or a walkthrough, then come back and say it was good. People are just remembering nostalgia over actual content. I've seen people say ROTT was better than ROTT 2013, which lol no. The original has more nostalgia and novelty, but the entire game itself? Ha.
Are complete insanity. There's a secret in the shareware level that runs on a TIMER that you will not get without knowing you have a time limit. Then there's secrets that require beating the moving walls single use, which you can miss or die, jump puzzles, obtuse switch puzzles, push walls / objects, etc. You're not going to get them without a guide, some maps are infamous. The shareware levels are easy mode, then you get a massive difficulty spike on the full version. It's a game for masochists. This is fine to an extent, but this is the entire game and gets really old, so the vast majority of players will not complete the game.
What happens is nostalgia people will replay the shareware levels at best, maybe attempt a few more levels if I'm being charitable, then quit, and the statistics show it.
The only people who think it's not a problem are the guys who like the Extreme ROTT expansion. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ro61K5hw3Q
And what's the percentage of the player base there? Probably the guys who completed the game in the statistics, and who knows if they even like the remaster.
It doesn't matter what the initial impression is. People are gonna waste their money on nostagia, never complete the game, and it won't be until months later that popular opinion matches reality. I'm just already there because I played the original and actually remember it, good and bad. Is what it is, play it for yourself, and you'll have a more nuanced opinion afterwards. FAFO.
I'm disappointed in how you spell "disappointed."
Nothing to counter this (and tbh, I can't say I completely disagree with some things of your whole post here), just saying I'm probably the only one in the camp that likes that expansion :P
EDIT: Deleted an unnecessary rant.
