Wonder Boy is an immediately recognizable brand name. Same reason they called Donkey Kong Country 2 and 3 by those names even if Donkey Kong himself was not playable.

Monster World is a subseries within Wonder Boy. For example Wonder Boy in Monster World is named Wonder Boy V: Monster World III in Japan.

The Legend of Zelda franchise has you play a male character even though the female protagonist's name is in the title. No one's said anything about that for 35 years, I don't think anyone cares if a Wonder BOY game features a female without her gender being mentioned in the title...

It's just the name of the franchise.

I don't like these localized names. Can't they just leave it be? Like Biohazard is a lot better name than Resident Evil and it's not about a residence in every installment so it's the same issue with this Wonder Boy/Girl thing.
