Dumbass question - 5th piston room.
So, I bought the game on release being VERY familiar with the original and have largely sailed through the game, with the small hiccup or sticking point, where I've got all the souls.

But I haven't managed to stop piston number 5. I'm dumbfounded as I can hear it clonking away when in a certain area of the Experimentation Rooms, but no way can I find the way to it. I can see there a few areas I haven't got to (like the sloping path around the large room with the geared driveshft in.

I've been ill, so I left the game for a few weeks, but now with fresher eyes, I'm still none the wiser.

Any help greatly appreciated.

In the remastered version of Shadow Man, there are some crucial changes to the original game. I'll put all under the spoiler tag.

Since some new areas were introduced, you have to stop 2 extra pistons in the engine block. As you know, every piston is related to a serial killer, exception made for the first one which you can reach from the engine block itself (I mean by using the teddy bear and warping to the zone).

The original game had 4 pistons to stop, the remastered has 6. You also need to find two extra retractors in the game to open the schism portals to Marco and Milton's "new" areas (they used to be found in Gardelle County Jail area in the OG, and you could quickly reach them via the 2 schism portals which were already accessible in Cathedral of Pain... but it's not the case in the remastered, since you can only find Batrachian in Gardelle).

Enjoy!

Sadly, that's not really what I'm getting at. Maybe I should have been clearer.

I've completed all the serial killers except Legion. I have all the souls. I'm just going round both cleaning up and trying to witness any of the new content as well.

However, the 5th piston is still operating - it's the only one left. And yet I can't find the room where the console for it is located. I assume it's where I stated (as I can hear it when I'm there through the walls) and that there are clear areas in there that I can see but not get too. The vast circular room with the massive crankshaft coming down from the ceiling into the ground has a staircase or slope running around it and I can't get there.

THat's the problem. I know how the game is and what the new content is. I just can't solve this bit.

I know it's always difficult to post these things as I'm trying to describe what I HAVEN'T done, but that's about the best I can do.

There are two operating consoles that require an engineer's key in that area. There's one on each far end of the paths leading away from the occult gate. One of them is very easy to miss, if you turn around clockwise or instantly, when you turn around. Because the console stays slightly out of view, because its obscured behind another object. So, unless making a 360 degrees turn, or turning counter-clockwise, it stays out of view.

Thanks for the help but I've just sussed out my idiocy.

The problem was I'd unlocked everything except that 5th piston (or rather turned it off). I'd killed all the 5, and just had Legion left. But I left the game a few weeks ago when I was in the midst of some horrible illness and because I wasn't concentrating properly, I assumed that I'd already unlocked the "backdoor" from the 5th piston and it was connected to the Experimentation Rooms.

I was wrong.

Turns out all I'd done was missed the very last room where the piston console was after Marco's Yard. The very last room to get to in the level.

But thanks all for the help.

What made it worse as well is that the game glitched on me a few weeks ago during a save, and when I loaded the game back up I had one extra accumulator than I should. This meant that the area I was unable to get to in Experimentation Rooms (which turned out to be a hole in the ceiling I'd overlooked with red walls) didn't need going through to reach the extra accumulator.

Bizarre but that'll teach me to play something more involved when I'm ill.
