General Chat was removed around a year ago in update 1.23.1. I'd say this was for a variety of reasons, but it boils down to the chat not really serving a purpose anymore beyond being used as advertising space for clans, and it was difficult to moderate, which was a problem due to the large amount of scam and phishing links that were posted in it rather often.

Which screwed everyone that isn't in a clan or group that has discord. I get that it's free and has a lot of features, but if you don't have a specific discord server to go to, you're pretty well cooked. For a lot of players, GC was a main way of finding groups/clans, and I'm guessing WG is too lazy because it's so much work to figure out a moderator option.

Like more and more multiplayer games lately. Devs either don't have the patience, or the player care any more, to put in the work for these things. When they see spamming and toxic BS get to be too much, they just disable chat altogether and let ppl fend for themselves with trying to find discord groups to join.

The whole system is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. That's why I play solo/don't bother with serious gaming anymore. The endless hours of searching for discord groups that match what you need, just to be able to team up with ppl isn't worth it. If ppl on a rando team get angry because I don't happen to do something right, they can deal with it or leave.

You can just join the official WoT discord server. It servers much the same purpose as General Chat did, except it's a lot cleaner and scam-less. You can find recruiting clans, people to platoon with, or general conversation.

In the early days, you could do this in the battle chat as there was a shared channel in addition to team and platoon channels. The coordinates of AFK (or alleged bots) but still hidden players were frequently broadcast just to quickly finish the match when it was, basically, over anyway.
