(Note: most wiley veterans horde free XP for critical module upgrades on new tanks and rarely if ever, use free XP to research tanks.)
The upgraded Turret provides 20mm more turret frontal armor.
The top engine provides almost 50% more power (250 HP) so that improves manoeuvrability significantly.
The stock (Tier 5) Gun is bad. Note the AP and APCR round have the same 110mm of pen, so stop shooting credits, hence why you bounce all the time. Manouver to find penetrable shots.
Ultimately, a majority of your problems are the stock nature of the tank and not really play style.

In General
1) Do not rely on the armor. It has weak armor and while sidescraping it exposes the shoulder as a flat plate.
Once fully upgraded, depending on play style.
2) Try Hardening, Vents, Rammer and play it more as a heavy. Avoid straight up brawling and trade from the second line a little more.
3) Try Vents, Turbo, Rammer and play it like a heavium. Use positioning to get to sides and rears.
I did get the turret and a gun upgrade (the one on the path for the Tiger P, I can’t remember the name). I’ve yet to max the engine, but I will soon. I’m saving for a tank on a different tech tree.
I’ve also tried what I have gathered, best I could at least, which is push the flank but keep a bit of distance from the enemy, and don’t go alone of course.
What I was doing before was assuming since I had a heavy tank I needed to be front line and center, which never worked very well for me.
With the upgrades I have, plus equipment, and change in tactics, I have had noticeably more success. Of course hard to say exactly how much because like everyone else I’m fighting bots most of the time. But in the few matches I got with real players, I wasn’t dead weight like usual.
I also discovered something that comes into play only on occasion, from combatting another VK 30.01 P on the enemy team. Since the turret sits high and frontwards I can peek a small incline with nothing but the heavy armored front turret facing forward, which let me bounce quite a bit.
Thank you both for the guidance, I hope to keep improving with this thing.
You're welcome. ^_^ May luck and good team dynamics bless you in your battles to come.
