I wish that wasn't the case, but until Rockstar/Take-Two meaningfully addresses the cheating problem, Red Dead Online just isn't worth playing on PC.
(Why the game does not offer a friends-only/private session out of the box is a mystery. Same as it not having a text-chat option. Or why they stopped development and let this insanely beautiful game with such huge potential rot on the vine...) *sad*
@BrownSuga8181 - Do not get me wrong: This game is beautiful and online is great! Just not in public lobbies. Another issue is that there is not that much content to begin with and with development having stopped, we are very likely not to ever see anything new being added down the road :(
but as said, many use private lobby to enjoy.
I would say, when you first get into online, the best is to begin in private lobbies, make money, understand how RDO works, and then when you want to do the online story/mission (which you can't do in private lobby) then go online and enjoy, and when you get tired of cheaters/players go back to private lobby.
and a little disclaimer, private lobby are free, you just need to understand how to do it and you have a guide on steam and couple video about it, it is fairly easy.
good game.
