Unfortunately, no, that doesn't work. Perhaps for you which is awesome, but not everyone. My current workaround is left-click dragging to move the camera where I want, and it lets you do it even if you picked an item up! :D
Yeah, I discovered this. Seems all the little hitches were when I moved the mouse imperceptibly while holding it. So I take my hand off the mouse entirely, and I can move around smoothly.
. . . which is annoying, because the way I've always looked for the blue chest is by panning around all over the valley, while rotating the view with the mouse.
