As far as I'm aware, hardwood only spawns in the biomes that show listed for it on the Collections screen. I don't think moving trees around affects that, as I believe every "wood-spawning" item has a certain chance of spawning a particular type of wood based upon where its placed rather than what type of tree it is.
There does seem to be a set number of pieces dropped per wood-spawning item, but I don't know if there's an overall total. For each item, it seems to be a max of three from what I've seen, and since there's a chance of multiple types of wood spawning from each item, you'll want to pick up the other types of wood (ex. softwood) while gathering hardwood, so that there's a chance for more hardwood to spawn.
The hardwood drops seem to be the highest in the biomes where you first start finding them - the Glade of Trust and the Forest of Valor, if I'm remembering correctly. You can find them in some of the later biomes, too, I believe, but the drop rates in those biomes seem to be skewed more towards the later types of woods, so the first two hardwood zones are usually the best for large amounts of gathering.
Hardwood, unfortunately, does not count as foraging, so having a buddy along will not help your collection rate any.
Hardwood seems to be a darker brown in color than the softwood, so that's a bit of a visual distinction there. One that is definitely hard to see at night, though. But, as mentioned above, you'll probably want to be picking up any of the wood you see lying around anyway, so not being able to tell which is which shouldn't be too major of an issue in this case.
if you need hardwood to spawn, make sure to pick up ALL the wood in the zone. Only so many wood pieces can spawn in a zone, and when wood spawns it is a chance to spawn any type of wood available in that specific zone. So, if you only pick up hardwood, eventually there will only be softwood.
Also, check your collection - foraging. You'll see which ZONES drop which types of wood. The type of tree does NOT matter! You can remove every tree and put down some hedge-type trees, and wood will spawn. I use this method in the forest in order to have a nice organized spot for wood to spawn.
Try it out!
I am of the opinion (I have finished all quests) that if you have a mission to collect that much hardwood and you don't have most of, or all of the areas open then you should probably focus on earning dreamlight for a while and unlock them.
Other areas help and at least one of the additional characters friends quest will allow you to clear the bridge in the forest.
I think too many of us focus on leveling up characters all the way when I believe that the devs kind of designed it so that you would always be going back and forth between different characters and earning dreamlight.
