1. It requires all this for a game update.
2. That its not actually posted in the news section or forum on Steam.
Anyway thanks for reposting it where it should have been to begin with.
This is caused by cross play, not an update. If it was only on steam (or any single platform), this problem wouldnt exist. Everyone wants to be able to play with anyone on any platform, accept the problems that comes with it.
Think of this closer to a phone app game with cross data saving, rather than an actual PC game.
MOST companies, also dont use steam as their main communication line. However, I do agree here, as most companies just dont put in the small effort it would require to post here.
It's a precaution, there's nothing required of you to do. Literally just don't play the game while offline when the patch is being deployed. They could've been quiet about it and simply ignored all the failed migrations of people messing it up. They could've also taken away all agency from you as an adult and simply made the game unplayable for a whole day, but they didn't. They have a game with an online infrastructure that also uses offline data, so I think it's fair to assume that on a new patch data migration might not work properly if the server is using the newest update while you're offline and saving your game with the old structure on. I think it's fairly common sense in regards to patching.
If you have cloud save enabled, is saves on your local drive and to the cloud too. You can do a manual save if you open the esc-menu > settings > click on the left side "save". The game saves on exit too. It's telling you that in the little info box when you click exit.
