items aren't being accepted - diamond in the rough quest

im trying to complete the 'diamond in the rough' quest with gaston and im in the cave of wonder, i charged up the coil and found the mirror, neither will stay in the spot when i try to put them in. they jump back into my inventory. i asked jafar for a hint and he basically insinuated i can put them in once i have the 2 items so i think its glitched

i ended up having to restart my game, for the first, and then restart again for the 2nd. in case anyone has the same glitch!
