I have about 200 crops or so planted in the Meadow and another 20 or so in the swamp.
Had to do some new gardening in the DLC zones for the new crops, but once I hit a stack of each, I just stopped harvesting. Installed one ancient machine in the desert when I got some extra L3 cores.
edit: even at my largest cash farming stage back in the beginning, I don't think I went above 60-80 plants. And once I learned about Berry Salad, I stopped cooking other meals for energy, and just moved the three types of berry bushes into the Meadow and put a large chest + cooking station next to them. And now the auto-cooker. I've got 300-350 berry salads stored up so far.
I think I started out with a normal size farm and then quests or daily tasks would ask us to grow something else. So that's how that started, then I just kept it all filled with pumpkin (a few other things now) so I don't have to re dig it all. Will change it if in need of land, in future.
