Lost Fishing Trap/Quest Deadend?

For the Burying the Eel quest for Maui, I made the fishing trap and when it said to put it near the dock, I dropped it while standing on the edge of the dock, closest to the water.

It's gone, it no longer comes up as a craftable item and I cannot find it anywhere near or on the dock.

What can I do? Does this mean I will not be able to progress to the next quest with Maui which will upgrade my pickaxe? I hope not. I am fairly far into the game and a restart would not be desirable.

Some craftable items are only available for the quest. You just need to wait a while for the traps to catch the eels. It's not instantaneous. Leave it and come back tomorrow and check the dock.

My wife did something similar and her trap has been just sitting there for like 2 days.

After talking to Maui, she needs to fish the eel from the red circle at the end of the dock.
