edit: you can craft another type of chest and theres one from scrooges shop. These two are much less room inside though
Actually that is the intent. It acts exactly like an ender chest. I use it for all my gems (well, most of my gems--I've exceeded the vintage chest's capacity already). You can go to the crafting bench and craft regular storage chests, but they only allow you to fill 2 rows. We don't know if the devs intend to eventually expand the storage capacity of those chests or not. For now, just plan on making a lot of chests. As a pro tip, if you buy tables or counters from Scrooge's catalog and place them behind the chests in your home, you can put items on the tables to indicate what type of items are stored in the chests. Currently that's the only storage management system we have.
