I'm not sure where you saw this, but if you put in New Game, it overwrites your existing avatar and game. So, no I don't believe it's possible to have more than one save file.
Even though I don't have the game.
Yeah, this is going to be problematic (along with the actual time of day) for a LOT of people. People are not going to want to pay for each member of the family. And it's just going to cause ill will with potential players and bite them when the f2p option comes out next year.
Was just about to suggest Family Share too.
Make each child their own Steam account, and then Family Share your games to them. Then each child will have their own save file and world. This also makes for a much smoother transition when your child is older/teen/adult.. etc.. so they can keep their own achievements, and saves, and games with them as they grow up.
Hopefully you can find a similar workaround for your kids.
