Literal game breaking bug
While I was playing I accidentally unplugged my computer, and my computer can’t hold a charge so it shut off while I was playing the game. After turning the computer back on and reopening the game I hit the continue button only to be shown the message in the first image on this post. https://Imgur.com/a/MgKFrLH I then tried both the load game and new game options which caused the window in the second image to pop up. hitting abort closes the game but doesn’t do anything else and the copy and clear button copy the text and clear it respectively. I have uninstalled the game, reinstalled it, logged out of steam and logged back in. I even tried to delete the files that steam had in the cloud to try and “factory reset” the game to the same position it was in when I bought it, and nothing has worked. I was really enjoying the game and it really sucks that this happened. I have no idea what could have caused it to break when the computer shut down but the only windows I had open at the time was steam and the game if that helps.

Hi Zalaam, that's a bummer. I'm just another player, but I assume the save files or the settings themselves that track them might have some problems. I'm not sure if there is any other state. It is possible the filesystem itself is corrupted in a way that is persisting, but I'd first assume it's only the game's data.

I may have some suggestions of things to try, though maybe the bad game data is coming back from the cloud as you suggested. It's possible to double check the save and other data.
  • One other thought (this may not work but is simpler to try) is if you "factory reset" and remove the save data from the cloud/steam, then Right-click on the game in your library list and choose "Properties..." then go to the "Local Files" tab/area, and choose "Browse" it should show a folder with the game. Then fully quit the steam client, and either write down that folder name/path and then reboot and open the folder again and then run the 'webbed.exe', or just run the 'webbed.exe' right then (though steam may have a background service running). This is to maybe try and avoid having steam download the game saves again.
  • I have another more direct suggestion, but it is more involved. If the old game data/backup is still good then maybe that can be recovered too, but it may be lost due to the sudden power off.
I have this same problem to. Though I quite out of it and powered down my computer. When I got back after work and went to play the game this happened.

It seems some other players are also encountering this so I'm following up here with some specifics to try. I'm not sure what the policy on messing with game saves is but if it's related to data left behind even after uninstall/reinstall then this is what you want to take a look at. At risk of discussing save recovery/removal - (also at your risk; though if Webbed is unplayable, and save files unrecoverable then there is not much data to loose). The verification part is provided for completeness though some may have already tried it.

Update and Verify your Webbed Install:

Try Removing game save Thumbnails
Try removal of game save Thumbnails that might be corrupt/empty
(EDIT: A short video version with similar steps to this was added; see "3." at that link.)
  1. Close Webbed if it is running. (This can be important to do.)
  2. Disable Steam Cloud Saving/Sharing
    • "From the Steam Library, right click on any game and select Properties..."
    • "Under the General tab, the Cloud Synchronization setting can be toggled."
  3. Open a file browser and go to:
    C:\Users\your-username\AppData\Local\
(replace "your-username" with your Windows account; note: the AppData folder might be hidden)
  4. Copy the whole folder named "webbed" and make a Backup of it before continuing.
  5. Open "webbed\default" folder
    • (C:\Users\your-username\AppData\Local\webbed\default) (not your backup)
    • (There should be files such as "save1.sav" and "save1.png")
  6. Delete ONLY any .png image files in the folder. (save1.png, save2.png, etc)
  7. Try starting the game and see if the problem still occurs.
  • (NOTE: Before re-enabling any Steam Cloud Save functionality (if at all), if things are now working, be sure to backup the save folder from Step 5 again just in case it restores over the newer files, or restores some older but removed files.)
  • (NOTE: If you do any of this and it does not help, and or you seek additional assistance from the developers for this or other related issues; PLEASE let them know that you have attempted these steps or the specifics of any others you have tried to perform. (Such as any past attempts to fix your save in any way etc.) since making unexpected changes leads to further confusion, mistakes, and time spent.)
If you're a Linux user using Proton, you're looking for a path such as
~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/1390350/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Local/webbed
or "a similar prefix for the first part to your steam folder containing "steamapps".

EDIT: Moved the second set of steps to consider into a double post below, to make managing that easier and in case it's later not needed for anyone with this exact issue.

Issue notes (misc/not-needed)
The other day I tested missing png thumbnails for game saves, though this did not trigger the issue on a linux system; however, a ZERO SIZE png save thumbnail will trigger the issue when scrolling over the affected save slot (presumably a corrupt one will as well). I've not attempted to truncate/corrupt an actual png or save file to see if an unrenderable save scene leads to a failed thumbnail generation (and then the issue). Missing thumbnails are regenerated, so if it is failing to generate thumbnails correctly from a save then that could be related. If it is not the game save data that is leading to the issue, there are a few other general settings including the ones that reference the last save file for "Continue" functionality. If you have a corrupted save1.sav but later saves -might- be ok, then we can work on further steps to try to swap the save into the first slot, or create a generic save to place in the first slot etc.

There seems to be a steady stream of reports of this issue (though not frequent); I'd wanted to wait for awareness rather than attempt to do reactive recovery and risk any underlying issue/change falling under the radar.. Might just be the increased size of the community :)

EDIT: Just tracking some past reports. If someone reports back here that either of the above steps helps then I'll plan to try to follow up in these threads.

A second set of steps to consider, though the crash report in this thread may not be helped by this. It could be relevant to errors about "This save file version is not compatible" or similar message that I don't remember the specifics of. It is provided in case the steps in the first part above have not helped to allow running Webbed at all. You likely do NOT need these second steps if your issue is fixed by the steps above or if your issue is exactly the same crash message as the original poster; this is the beginning of a "Nuke it from orbit" option.

Consider Removal of Save (or all) data
I'm not certain that corrupt/empty png (or this specific issue) would result from failure of an unrenderable but readable/valid save file, so the below might not help, but if the game outright cannot be played after the above steps (and the files are not being auto-restored to cause the issue by Steam Cloud), removing some of the data unique to your system might help. See the steps below

If removing the png files does not help (your save may be corrupt/unrenderable):
  1. Close Webbed if it is running. (This can be important to do.)
  2. Open a file browser and go to:
    C:\Users\your-username\AppData\Local\webbed\default
(replace "your-username" with your Windows account; note: the AppData folder might be hidden)
  3. You should already have a backup of the folder from the first steps; and Steam Cloud disabled for Webbed.
  4. Remove the save file and it's backup.
    • Example: remove "save1.sav" and "save1_backup.sav" and "save1.png"
    • You may need to remove ALL save files and related png.
  5. Restart the game again and see if allows you to start a new game, and then exit and then reload the game again.
  • (NOTE: if you remove the first save slot's data but not the later ones then it may not show -any- saves available. You can try restoring the backup folder)
  • (NOTE: If you do any of this and it does not help, and or you seek additional assistance from the developers for this or other related issues; PLEASE let them know that you have attempted these steps or the specifics of any others you have tried to perform. (Such as any past attempts to fix your save in any way etc.) since making unexpected changes leads to further confusion, mistakes, and time spent.)

i did the method of deleting the thumbnails and although it didnt fix the saves, it allowed me to delete the old saves and start a new one, which made the game playable again. thanks and i hope the other people with this issue see this

No problem. Sorry that it could not recover the old save files. I'm glad you can now play though! :winter2019happyyul: Thank you very much for confirming that one of the approaches helped.

For other players - This is a short Video example of the first "Try Removing game save Thumbnails" steps in the comment further above. It uses a slightly different folder path
%LOCALAPPDATA%\webbed\default
which goes to the same folder. It was just simpler to show without text/words in the video. Maybe it is simpler for all languages.

Video of "Try Removing game save Thumbnails"
(Again, this is the same as the above, just slightly different and with a video)
  1. Verify Webbed Game Data: (steam guide link) (NOT in video)
  2. Disable Steam Cloud Sharing (steam guide link) (NOT in video)
  3. Remove Webbed PNG files.
    • Video example: https://i.imgur.com/Z1YHkRZ.mp4 (en)
    • Detailed Steps: (Google translation link[translate.google.com])
This is only useful for fixing the oSaveSlotMenu Draw crash.

      First (not shown):
      - Update Webbed and Verify Steam Game Data.
      - DISABLE Steam Cloud Save Data feature for Webbed.

      EXIT WEBBED BEFORE CONTINUING
      1. Go to "%LOCALAPPDATA%"
      2. BACKUP the "webbed" folder!!
      3. Go into "%LOCALAPPDATA%\webbed\default" folder.
      4. Remove all -PNG- image files (one is likely corrupt/unloadable)
      5. Load each save slot to regenerate thumbnail.
Consider backing up the working "webbed" folder again, then enabling Steam Cloud Sharing again...

Thumbnail for a Save Slot will be re-generated after loading and exiting.
(That is C:\Users\your-windows-username\AppData\Local\webbed\default and "AppData" is often a Hidden folder.)
The Google translation may not be very good for some languages. Sorry. I copied the same text to this comment in case it is ever removed from hastebin.

If removing the PNG image files does not help, maybe the Save files (*.sav) are bad. Make sure that Steam Cloud Sharing is disabled so that Steam does not restore the bad PNG. (Step #2 above).

You can wait to see if the developers add any check/fix for the "gml_Object_oSaveSlotMenu_Draw_64" / "non-existing sprite" problem. It can be caused by a problem with the PNG images, like a sudden power off of a computer or the game. But if the Save files (*.sav) are bad and cause that problem then I do not think a game update will fix that. :winter2019sadyul:
