am I screwed?

I was putting the mechanical ant back together, and after I forged the mandibles, I was returning it to the giant ant...but it disappeared into solid ground. There was a sign with a down arrow on it, and some kind of creature living in the ground that just shows the tip of itself.

Can I get the mandibles back from the mystery creature?
