Derelict Ships?

Click on the ship and then select "approach". Your ship will move close enough that your robots will start collecting any loose supplies. The retrieve anything useful, deconstruct it so that you can use the metals to build your own ship or sell the metal to make money, Use parts of the derelict to add to your own ship, it's up to you.

I like to build a teleporter over there... that way there is no travel time. Then tell them to collect equipment that I want and deconstruct the rest.

The question though is, can you make a mini ship out of it and have two ships?

For that last bit; Nope, it all has to be a singular ship, though I think you can loophole it and have only a single tile 'bridge' connecting the two. Just be wary of meteoroids in that particular situation.

There is an option, if you stumble across a space port, to sell sections of your ship. If you find a derelict in good enough repair ( i have, once) then you can sell the second ship as a section.

As Aleron mentioned though, it has to physically attached to your ship to transport it to the space port.

Like you, I always keep one of my reactors from the early game and a teleporter to shorten the distance.
