So where does slaves run to?

So, say a 'friend' of mine beat his slave till she ran away. I game terms, she's on a mission, and a pop up box indicates that after 30 minutes unless she's found she will have fled for good. No quest becomes active.

Where do they run to? Is it entirely random in the environment somewhere? Are they indicated on a map? Anyone done this?

To be clear, this is not referring to the quest in the main quest-line involving a runaway slave..
