The GF server *was* an official server, and SW worked fine there. Whether or not legal, it proves that SW doesn't need to have technical issues to run. These issues are, apparently, not inherent to SW itself.
Whether or not we should play an illegal version is more of a moral issue. But since LG doesn't support me to play at their server (which I would prefer since I have friends there), it's not like BSW is stealing me as a potential LG customer.
Most people who start with Linux hate it. I hated it vigorously for 7 years actually. Linux is a university level OS, and hard to work with for most household users. I wouldn't recommend it for just anybody. I myself happen to be a computer savvy, and a 37 year experience programmer. I understand completely that you hated it, and, imo, by far not unjustified.
But, again, SW has proved to be capable to operate under WINE, so there should be no technical limitations to do so.
Furthermore, the XignCode issue is being reported by Windows users as well. So it's not a typical Linux issue, although it does seem to occur there more often.
LG should reconsider their no-Linux policy. Linux is rapidly gaining popularity among gamers. Ever more people feel the urge to abandon the commercial OS'es. And distros like Manjaro and Mint are rather user-friendly, and improving. In fact, I recommend Linux Manjaro Cinnamon to all who seek an alternative for Windows.
Anyways, it's their loss. We can always play on private servers instead. One can argue that they are not really competitors of the official server, since they accommodate a different demographic, i.e. Linux users.
2. Download a program from some unknown external site and install it in my Steam game directory.
Seriously??!!
Thanks for the tip, but I think that I'll pass.
However, if you could provide me with the source code for that fix, so that I can verify the listing and compile it myself, then I may consider it, It would have the additional advantage that the version would be native to Linux.
I will link your solution to some friend Linux savvies, and if they can assure me that it's safe solution, though. If so, I'll report that on this thread.
