Performance improvement - FPS, LAG
Since I had some problems with lags I searched on google a lot. Unfortunately there isn't much known about this topic so it took a while until I found this Guide on how to improve performance:

https://www.nightofthedead.org/performance-issues-improve-fps-reduce-lag/

By disabling the fog entirely I had a huge increase. However, game doesn't look well anymore. Best solution for me was to use the capping and increasing view distance technique described in the Guide

I wonder what performance hacks and workarounds you guys found out about. Please help to collect every solution that might help others to gain more fps.

I'm on night 30 right now and the lag is increasing. Disabling volumetric fog without disabling fog entirely did the trick for me. Thanks for linking this guide mate, you just helped me out

Thanks for this. I seen another post about lag and it said to disable fog and i was was wondering how. One quick question are you suppose to leave a blank line before systemsettings or just place it the next line underneath the text. like

xxxxxxxx
(systemsettings)

or

xxxxxxx

(systemsettings)

Most other games that has systemsetting allready in engine or config files has the space, just wondering if this game should have it also. the link above says nothing about leaving a blank line between them.

I tried these settings and i see no difference in fps at all and still getting the same lag.

There are different issues with different hardware / software combinations. I'm sorry that these settings didn't help ya. Did you try all of them?

You have to use [SystemSettings] and you don*t need to leave a blank line btw
Performance in the City are so bad, im thinking, i play with an 20 Year old PC. And the same is in the Emergency

And i reduce the Resolution to 1600x900 to test it, but it dont help´s.

System Specs:

Ryzen 5 3600
KFA2 RTX 2060 Super
32 GB DDR 4 Ram 3000 Mhz
Win 10 64 Bit

You can see, how low is the GPU and CPu Usage but the Game eating 5,5 Gb GPU Ram and if i go into m< Inventroy..Jesus..Temp is going up like Hell and GPU Usage is going to 80-90%

devs seem to be working on a fix for these high load issues.
however not everyone is experiencing these.
in my case the game runs just smooth and great.
only on high waves some lag occured temporarily
after changing vol fog setting game runs fine on my very old pc even after wave 30.

I done some testing and it seem like nothing i change makes much of a difference to even notice. on average i'm only getting around 30 fps and when the horde comes it's between 5 and 20 fps. It shows i'm only using about 20% cpu and 30 to 40% gpu. Why arent my cpu and gpu working harder. I using about 10gb out of 32gb system memory so why is my fps so low? I set no fog and turn setting all the way on low or even set them to medium and the fps is the same. my fps will drop a little if i set any settings on high.
System
Ryzen 7 1800x
EVGA 1070ti
trident z 32gb 3000mhz ram
game on ssd
win 10 pro 64 bit

when the game saves it lags so hard i think my game is going to crash.

There must be some issue with the save games / persistent saves. I could reproduce when it started to lag in my game.

Since everything was fine until the late waves I thought this has just to do with the amount of zombies. I guess I was wrong!

I reloaded an older savegame and played through the nights again. As soon as I visited the hospital after night 28 the game began to lag. And no matter what I tried after that, the lagging kept continuing.

So I guess there is some coincidence with the later nights and visiting the city again. Maybe stuck zombies, items that keep falling forever or something like that?

Maybe some other players could reproduce this

Maybe that's my problem. i can't remember which day the lag started for me. all i remember is it seemed to happen right after a patch. I'm on day 49 and the fps is real bad between 24-34 all the time and at horde night 5-25. My cpu and gpu load is only around 30% and my Gpu fans hardly spin from heat. I just don't under stand why my hardware is not putting any effort in to help with the fps.

Wow! I was getting 20-30 fps, sometimes dropping down to 15, with settings all on medium. I just turned off the volumetric fog, and now I've got everything on Very High and I've got a steady 35-40, no more random drops or freezes! Devs should maybe disable volumetric fog until it's better optimized

I can set everything on very high and increase the resolution and turn of either one or both of the fog settings and i get the same fps and lag. When i disable volumetric fog it washes out my color and makes the game look weird.

I'm so glad for beeing able to point you in the right direction. Spread the word!

I’m barely getting 45fps and it would drop down to 15fps when I reached day 30, I have everything on max settings. even played with the settings from little to no results. Not getting more than 45fps sucks.

I’m on 3440x1440 120hz gsync
EVGA RTX 2080ti FTW3 Ultra @stock clock
i9-9900k @5.2ghz
32gb RAM @3600mhz

And my wife’s pc just lags on horde night unless she drops something from her inventory and stand there for a minute before it goes back to normal. Lag spikes are constant.

Her pc is
AMD Freesync playing at 1080p @144hz
i3-10300 @stock
RX 5600xt @stock
16gb RAM @ 3000mhz

Hopefully they’ll patch this issue and optimize the game performance.
