I think the most I've seen is 6.
Im curious if all armor has the chance for 8 open slots and built-in coils above 6 or something. In a previous game version I found a built-in 6 + 2 coils plus 7 open slots, leather armor, but thats about all so far. Judging from how many items we have cumulatively farmed, the chance for these armors has to astronomically low. Its probable like 75% for 2, 15% for 3, 5% for 4, 2.5% for 5, 1% for 6... and for anything higher is basically getting struck twice by lightning while waving a winning powerball ticket level of luck.
So here is my theory based on other gaming experience. Items in this game has affixes in the form of prefixes and suffixes. Most of the prefixes are flat values and most of the suffixes are % values. The only two I know which are not are crit rate % and damage % are I believe prefixes. There is also prefix and suffix values which are coil sockets instead of a value like Fire Reinforcement. So the main armor pieces all have a bare minimum of 2 coil sockets. Uniques have up to 6 affixes where yellow Rares have up to 4 affixes. I am not 100% positive on the socket value, but it is at least 1 and I think 2. I am not sure if an affix can be a 3 for socket value.
So what that image I linked in the original post is a chest piece with 2 affixes of Strength +5 and Judgement +5. The base of the chest piece should be 2 coil sockets. I believe I rolled 4 affixes as coil sockets. or it could be 3 affixes as +2s with an affix as a dud that did nothing. Either would result in the 8 sockets I got there. I believe than an affix can roll as a "dud" that means the affix is nothing. Which explains why you get yellows with 4 affixes and some with 2 which is minimum with no extra coil sockets.
Of course I don't have access to the code so I am not sure. This is based on personal experience with this game and other games with a similar RNG loot system.

3 coils + 10 coils + 7 slots. Total 34 coils
The synthesized equipment data seems to be random, but I feel that there is a certain range of random numbers in the random table. I got many desert suits with full stats +10 drop rate +85% through synthesis.

I even tried saving the game before I used the bench and it gave me the same crap everytime I did it and reloaded the game.
You cannot save scum the bench there. It is seeded.
However, I can also confirm that save scumming is alive and well for the mutated animals. When I find a lion or polar bear, Ill do 15 to 20 reloads just to get an idea of whats possible for the items, stat-wise. Sadly this game used to load at least 50% faster back in the day, and even with my pretty decent rig, it takes a minute or so. Kind of takes the fun out of it, almost...
