Even though the melee combat is bad (compared to Nioh), the ranged combat is serviceable (compared to Horizon Zero Dawn), and the story is... left for imagination, what this game has (or had) is good puzzles in the form of hidden mechanics and good trap combat.
I enjoyed spending time uncovering AI pathing algorithm, hidden Bait Trap mechanics, and floating structures logic. With those combined pieces of knowledge, I had lots of fun in speedrunning (escaping the island), and also in manipulating AI behavior. Made some friends in multiplayer too and also met trolls and egoistic jerks, lol.
Is it worth it for you, I dunno.
The map is not randomized, so it's even the same and so its not that catchy like 7DtD with its random Seeds, but if you had like the Horde Mode of 7DtD you will also like NOTD.
Here is a good example for the Main part of the Game:

"Building traps over the traps to shred the Zeds and make sure you're staying alive as long as possible." xD
