The open world part of this game is pretty shallow, no NPC dialogues, no stories, just a dead world for grinding resources.
The survival part is pretty good - uncovering hidden mechanics, accumulating tricks, applying knowledge to survive, with low emphasis on hunger, thirst, warmth, biological needs, etc
Melee combat is crap, ranged combat is mediocre, but trap combat is awesome.
PvP is worthless in the current state thanks to glitches, exploits, and cheats.
So, just keep on strengthening what this game is good at with new updates.
Why complain about a game with X if you don't like X in the first place?
I knew this was tower defense, everything else is either A: escape, B: loot to build tower defense. Did you miss that piece of information? Cause I sure got it.
Play something else. Leave this game to people who actually like it. And, by definition, tower defense games.
It is a TOWER DEFENSE GAME, oh high and mighty but so very brain dead one. Look at the first trailers, "And at night, the hordes come" then it shows ... a tower defense grid, with flame throwers, and the rest of the long range defenses. Look at the update trailer, looks exactly like a beefier version of the initial release.
Go play Call of War Duty Lobby Shoot McFaces.
Also, this isn't how the game is described and marketed on the store page. It's basically presented as a 7D2D clone (which is a really good thing). 7 Days has a key tower defense aspect, but with NotD this overshadows the crafting, and more importantly the exploration of an interesting game world.
I don't really want to refund but the gameplay loop isn't what is being sold on the store page. I think NotD, more than any other early access survival crafting base-builder has the potential to seriously compete with 7 Days and really establish itself as its own game. I don't think it can do that while it focuses so dramatically on nightly tower defense. There is a good reason why 7 Days spreads out the horde invasions weekly and lets players adjust that to be less or more frequent.
Criticism alone doesn't help to improve a game.
To be fair, how long has 7D2D been in Early Access? Give the game a bit more time, or a few more staff.. since just 2 seems to be not enough for all the wants that the playerbase has.
As a new player I think one change could be on easy difficulty you start at 5 am and on normal difficulty you start at 9 am. Those extra hours alone would be a big help to get up and running.
Also perhaps combining a couple of the work benches together. I spend more time running back and forth between them trying to find what I need to build.
