First night is too hard
I just bought the game, followed the tutorial and built a small base with a few workshops.
I could not gather the materials to build walls, lights, traps but killed a few Zeds with arrows during daytime.

Problem is that i thought that on night one a few Zeds will attack and that i would be able to kill them one by one with the axe, standing in front of the stairs.
Hopelessly, about a dozen of them attacked me and i just could kill one.
The rest was a sad revive, get killed, rince and repeat.

To make it short, i died about 10 times and at 1AM game time i was fed up and i quit as i was not going to repeat this for 2 hours of game time untill dawn.

When you discover the game, you spend a lot of time learning how to craft this or that, so midnight comes very fastly.

This first experience was quite frustrating...

You're not serious? Surely? I stood on my empty ramparts with only a knife and finished the horde. It ends after a short time, then you're back to looting again. Don't just stand thee if 5 come at once - get off your base and run around a bit, picking them off. Make a spear or a one handed axe. The tree felling axe is for TREES. It's right there in the name FELLING axe.

ps. Don't take it as a nasty comment bro, it isn't. On my first 5 minutes of my first ever game I met a bear. Game over. Went back with revenge in mind. Game over. I'm started new games at least 25 times and don't mind failing a bit. It's what gets you good at something, practice. If on night one all you had to do is stand with your ♥♥♥♥ in your hand, I wouldn't want to play. Use your head a little, make stuff, go look in houses and stuff - I have automatic rifles, Katana and all kinds of ♥♥♥♥ after just an hour of playing. And STILL preferred the spear. Lots of love from Mansfield.

Well i restarted (in the easiest mode to learn the basics) and i had a good time.

I had the chance to spawn near many cars and houses so it helped.

Now i'm ready for night 2 ;p
I just wait for the surviving zeds in front of my locked door (if i die i will have more time to reequip with stocked gear)
(i added walls after this screenshot)

Just added 2 Ballista and some spikes at the entrance. The Ballista are on the other side aiming down the hill where they come up. The spikes are to channel them into the sides of the first compressor. I also have a shredder. HN4, I was on the ground with a flame thrower. Only one reached the first compressor!

I am playing Peaceful as well. Started on Normal, then easy. Peaceful works to learn what you get from where. The guide is well worth watching.

A few advices for you:
- Z don't attack the base if the player is reachable directly. So you can build a base with all your workshops, and another tiny one where you spend your nights.
- Z hate the spikes you can craft easily (melee trap), so you can trace a "S-like" corridor to force them to go in in order to reach you.
- The spear is better than the one-hand axe for the beginnig. Ok its slower, but it hits in a better range so you have time to turn around and run.
- You run faster without any tool in your hands, so when you run away from the Z, think about unequipping your weapon, and think to re-equip it when facing the Z again.
- Hunt with the bow at the beginning, and cook the meat: cooked meat restores health and condition.

And once you have the opportunity to: move your main base into a "one-way place" (I choose the roof of a building near the city), so it will be easier to put your traps in order to slaughter the Z every night!

Enjoy!

I'm loving what I see so far in this game. The OP does make a point for peeps who may not be familiar with tis type of genre. I could understand the first 24 hrs getting acclimated to the environ, the systems, etc. Perhaps the second night is when the zbeez begin the attack. You can do it fine on the first night though...you just cant spend alot of time sight seeing and work your tail off. Speaking of sight seeing...anyone know if there are motorcycles or other forms of transport in?

i wrote a guide explaining the mechanics clearly for new players, specifically to help ease all the frustration.

Next to my spawn location was a house surrounded by a fence, I just made my base inside with a pendulum trap at the gate entrance. It was VERY easy. Mind you this was on normal difficulty, but It was still a solid start.

My first night (on peaceful) was easy with one cutter. By the second night I had two cutters, a compressor and a pendulum. The zombies didn't care for that, so they tore my base apart and destroyed everything. Of course I died. All that work for nothing! And that was on peaceful.

doesn't sound like you quite understand yet :) ... play around with the traps a bit to see how they can work together. my first few nights i only have 2 pendulums with spikes placed at each end of each pendulum. when it swings it will knock the zeds into the spikes. should keep you going for up to night 4 .. as long as you are there to baby sit it.

traps do need to be reloaded and repaired from time to time. so theres a good chance your traps weren't even activating if you didn't reload them.

Controlling flow matters. Make a base, keep only one entrance. Carve a pathway with barbed spikes leading to it, and around base. Should help atleast through the first couple nights.

I too made a similar way. Found a small place, put barbed fence all around and only one small entrance leading to it. And a pendulum there. Pretty much sat twiddling fingers as they zombies were getting murdered.
Playing on peaceful.

They only attack base, foundations, etc, if there is no path to you. This doesn't work like 7DtD where they chose the weakest point close to you and bash there, here they need to reach you, you can't even block this path with a wood fence, then they will destroy evertything.

first time i started on hardcore hard, built a small 2x2 by exact corner of the industrial compound facing the woods, and as it happens the zeds walk nicely along the compund wall straight into my traps ;) also, saving your game helps :D :D
