The key is to crafting a cooking area and looking at the recipes to see what they do, either health, condition or usually both. Save food that just heals for when you need to heal and save food that increases your condition for when it drops.
The condition metre is the bar underneath your health and stamina and each block counts as 10. So if small meat increases condition by 10 then you get one block of condition back for eating it etc.
Learning cooking helps increase your conditioning. Steak platter + cake almost doubles your pool
