Do you get to choose or customize your main character (like fire emblem)

There is no visual/name customization to the main character (Irving), he is treated the same as all the other characters in this regard. Hope this helps :)

Good, I hate how fire emblem started making all the world revolve around some custom MC.

Is the mc really that custom in fire emblem? The only thing you change is looks, name and gender (in the newest games). The character is otherwise using a premade background with pre-made character reactions toward them. So I guess I don't follow your reasoning.

I realise that but it's still an odd thing to be concerned about when deciding to buy a game or not.

Some people want to immerse themselves in the game and as such may not want to play as a premade character. Be it to play as themselves or as any custom character that would feel personal to them.
It can be a hard requirement for some when playing rpgs

The observer is the player. We don't need to have a character that is there just to watch.

for me too. the game is 5 bucks now but thats still no buy for me
