Am I missing something?

Ship HP seems to go down no matter how many 'elementals' I kill...

The tiles say either deals damage to unit or x amount of damage to the ship.

There are orange tiles you can stand on to absorb the damage to the ship with one of your units. The more elementals you kill, the less tiles there are = less damage to ship.
