But let's entertain the "free DLC" argument. The devs said the DLC has been free because the game sold higher than expected. In other words, people ALREADY PAID FOR IT. It's also not a stretch to say that most people PAID FULL PRICE because they announced sales numbers of (IIRC) 300k+ BEFORE any of the discounts happened.
Now, why do you think those people paid full price for a Melty Blood game? Do you think it's because they expected to see their favorite Melty Blood/Tsukihime characters? I'd say that's very likely. As the devs said themselves, those people directly funded the DLC by ALREADY PURCHASING THE GAME AT FULL PRICE.
I know what you're going to say. "Those people paid for the existing game with the characters it had at the time". But let's be realistic here. How many people play every character in any given fighting game? You might say, "they're still fighting against characters they don't use" but there are also people who leave if they see characters they don't like.
People are highly selective when it comes to fighting game characters. If the game is a base package with a set price, and customers only want to buy one character, they have no choice but to purchase the entire package. Some games have started to understand this and offer base packages with only a few characters, and then you can buy the ones you like. But they still let players fight the ones they did not buy. This is common practice.
Let's entertain a few more possible scenarios.
Imagine if Melty Blood was named "Type Moon Fighters" or if they made it clear from the beginning that most additional content would be Fate-related. Do you think the same people would have bought the game? Chances are, no. Would it have sold more? That depends on how many Fate fans are fine with fighting games. I don't know the answer to that. But this also leads to my next point.
There are plenty of Fate fans who are complaining that this is a Melty Blood game and not a Fate game. Do you have an excuse to shut those people down too? Among those are people who pumped tons of cash (again, NOT FREE, there is MONEY already involved) into games like FGO, probably expecting more Fate related games/content. But that's not the same as buying a Fate product and then waiting years for the only content to be from something else.
Imagine if Street Fighter 6 or Tekken 8 had only a few of the returning popular characters. The rest are new characters or whatever. After a year of people waiting for their favorites, the devs suddenly start adding characters from Final Fantasy. Most people would probably be upset at that. They did already pay for SF/Tekken expecting SF/Tekken characters. Same applies to Melty.
That is the CORE ISSUE here. "FREE" is irrelevant. The people shutting down complaints are essentially LEECHING off the 300k+ who already paid FULL PRICE and ended up FUNDING the "free" DLC. That they likely never wanted. It's COMPLETELY REASONABLE to be upset about that.
Now, to be fair, I think it's perfectly fine to praise the game if you think it's great. But why didn't you write reviews praising it earlier? I've been updating my review constantly based on the current state of the game, but I still left the original review explaining and praising all its good points.
I still tried to get other people to try this game, even though it has so many issues that I despise. Where were all of you "free DLC so shut up" people during that entire year?
I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of people rushing to defend Type-Moon are only taking advantage of this situation to shout others down and feel good about themselves, using the "free DLC" angle. They probably don't even actually know or care about the situation at all. The entire internet is full of noise like that.
And I say Type-Moon because I doubt French Bread are even relevant to this entire debacle. It's not their decision. Yes, I know French Bread wanted to make a Fate fighter, and that's why they made Saber. But it was Type-Moon's call. They told them to make a Melty game. If Type-Moon let French Bread make a Fate fighter from the get-go we wouldn't be in this situation now, would we?
I've seen people blame Kinoko Nasu for making the call. Let's not forget that Type-Moon is now a big company run by a bunch of people. It's unlikely that a single person at the top is responsible for all big decisions. Even Kinoko Nasu has to think about pressure from the rest of his staff/funding. That's how the world works most of the time. So I wouldn't assume it was just him at fault.
If you want to simplify the situation, let's put it down to this: they should've been more transparent about future plans for this game, from the beginning. Only now with the latest update, they're saying "no more summons". IF, from the beginning, they were clear about additional content being mostly Fate-related, the customer base would likely be very different, and you wouldn't see anywhere near this much complaining.
Finally, I'd like to say that I considered this scenario with both characters being Fate, but I didn't think they would do it because it'd obviously make a lot of people angry. I find it very hard to believe that they did not see this coming. They could easily have just put out one Tsukihime character and one Fate character and most people would be happy.
No matter how you look at it, this was a bad decision by whoever was responsible.
tl;DR: It's not a simple issue of "FREE DLC" because the 300k+ people who ALREADY BOUGHT this game for FULL PRICE already DIRECTLY FUNDED your "FREE DLC". People who, it's safe to say, very likely wanted Melty/Tsukihime characters. And WAITED PATIENTLY for OVER A YEAR. So to come in now and say "you're childish whiners angry at free content" is a GROSS OVERSIMPLIFICATION and MISCHARACTERIZATION that only takes everything at face value.
Don't feign moral superiority if you're coming in now after staying silent for a year while the rest of us were already paying, promoting and defending the game.
By the way, feel free to personally attack me. I don't care anymore. I'm not even going to look at the replies. I just wanted to point out the common fallacies of the "free DLC" argument.

You are saying the title of the game was an implicit promise/hook, therefore making you feel betrayed or bait-and-switched when they didn't... release them quick enough? I understand feeling a bit bitter if you are part of that group, but it's not like these are going to be the last DLC characters ever to come out.
What's actually tragic is not the FGO characters, it's the review-bombing. What exactly will that achieve? The DLC choices may be unexpected, but they are purely a net plus, nothing is getting taken away and more content is getting added. Not that it would matter now that the damage is done...
Do you realize how small this game is to warrant boycotting it for... releasing the wrong characters?
Agreed, I thought I was buying into a Tsukihime game, as indicative of past MB games. Instead, it's looking like a mish-mash of Type-Moon properties. I should have seen the writing on the walls when we got Saber.
Then to make it more insulting, they censored Ushikawamaru (what's the point of even adding her if they were just going to censor her?)
Oh, and we're still waiting on Nanaya Shiki (not counting the panda costume), but I guess French Bread doesn't care about MB anymore. There's still several classic characters MB needs, yet we're getting stuff no one asked for.
its not even censore
they literally took her official design from FGO CE card. here is the proof https://imgur.com/e7O5Pzn
basically people pretend like they know things but actually they doesn't
its so stupid to see them complain just because.
Maybe they saw the anime, and in it she doesn’t have it
im pretty sure they just googled pictures of ushi...
