Recovery refuses to work

Am i missing something? I'm mashing every button, holding them, everything. but online i only recover every once in a blue moon. It seems to work perfectly fine in single player, so what the hell am i missing? Quick recover is necessary to not get absolutely ♥♥♥♥♥♥ in this game and not being able to is making it impossible to play.

just hold A and the direction you want to tech in. if the opponent has a hard knockdown on you, you will have to slow tech on the ground.

I know this is an old thread but I am having the same problem. could you explain what you mean by "slow tech on the ground" please?

You can't tech after a hard knock down. Your character will get up normally rather than roll.

Does the opponents combo counter turn grey? If not, you couldn't have teched at any point. If it does turn grey, it means you missed one or more opportunities to escape. Holding a button and direction should be enough to automatically tech ASAP, but a lot of optimised combos will go on for ages with no actual tech window at all.
