the ai townsfolk in single player keep unlocking the gate and harvesting my crops and its annoying how can I get them to stop

I can't even move at all I selected wasd controls but all I can do is drop things and the numbers don't select a tool either.

My buddy and I were running a private game, where the shops bugged out for me (no seeds for sale for over a week in-game time). So I decided to reconnect, but my character, money, inventory got reset. Any way to fix this? Really like the game, would want to continue playing...
