Not feeling a lot of reason to play Ryu over ken?
I'm kinda getting third strike vibes here. I've been playing ryu and have gotten to a pretty decent level in plat, but I just feel like he's missing something. almost like he's not quite fitting in with the rest of the cast in sf6. most characters have got such trickery, and ryu just doesn't. the best trick he's got is dr into overhead or low mix up. and he's got solid damage for sure. But i feel like ken's generally got everything ryu has and better.

Luke is too much of an unappealing douchebag. Like those Paul kids from youtube. So even if Luke is the superior Ryu I'm still playing the real Ryu.
If you like shotos you really should give Luke a try. I don't really care for his aesthetic either but his kit is really fun to use, especially the perfect knuckles.

Though if you're not playing Ken because there's too many Kens, then Luke is pretty much the same in that regard.

Ryu is mostly a side character for me anyway, because Akuma and Cammy have been my jam since the release of SFIV. That's why I'm not too bothered about playing him even though he's a bit limited. Any of them I decide to pick up now is basically just a placeholder for Akuma.

I'd rather try learning a bit more about some other characters maybe, both Manon and Marisa interest me.

You might not be wrong about Luke's gameplay though. I did do Luke's trials and he does have some fun things going on for him and Sand Blast is a great projectile too.

Compared to Ken Ryu seems to move slower to me. Ryu lacks a good lunge.
Ryu is a solid allrounder while Ken is about aggression. Luke is overall just a better allrounder though

Ryu is better imho to learn the basics of the game. After that, well....

Ryu has a lot of + on block moves, but he's got the same issue he's had in a lot of games -> Ryu has no game plan. He instead adapts to his opponent, able to exploit their weaknesses thanks to his well rounded kit, but doesn't lean into anything.

He's a great character to start with if you don't know what you like in fighting games, as you can sample different fighter templates through him. He's also great if you just really enjoy that adaptive game-plan mindset.

Most of his + moves aren't practical moves to be throwing in neutral. 6HP can be used for some meaties, but it's startup animation is too slow to be practical for that purpose.

Ryu is just a mid character. Not bad, not amazing. I'm playing him mostly because I'm waiting for my main shoto Akuma and the ladder has too many Kens already.

Luke is too much of an unappealing douchebag. Like those Paul kids from youtube. So even if Luke is the superior Ryu I'm still playing the real Ryu.
luke does have my second favorite taunt in the game tho, with the mock hadouken

Reasons to play:
  • Rocking his classic outfit (costume 2)
  • Added challenge
  • You appreciate a zen gameplan
Wall bounce is not a mechanic i like. It makes his combos super dependent on spacing. Hashogeki is silly, who wants to play with a melee only hadoken???

I switched to Ken week 2 despite being a Ryu main since SF2. No regrets. All of Ken’s moves are great.

Luke would have been fantastic, from an aesthetic perspective, if he didn't have the tats and that "California"/bruh kind of attitude.

People see enough of that online, usually from kids far from California. Don't need it in my SF game. Same reason I really dislike Kimberly. She's just one of those annoying Anime/cosplay girls with a skin-job.

I’ve lived in California, Luke is not Californian at all. He’s Gen Z (“Let’s Go!”) Also… skin job? She’s just black.

Well, prior to SF6, Ryu was usually the one that dominated and Ken the ... casual's champion.

I play Ken because he's fast, easy to get the very basics mastered and not demanding too much, with respect to the kinds of results you achieve.

Ryu is who you play if you're "serious" about fighting games, imo. He's more patient, rewarding of discipline and instils too habits of mind into the player.
Ken has been stronger than Ryu in almost every SF game besides most versions of SF2 and Alpha 3
he's supposed to be Mr Fundamentals to have fun with him you need find fun in footsies and neutral game.

I don't know Spin Knuckling right into hashogeki after being baited with couple hadoukens was kind of fun. I enjoyed that bait even though I was on the receiving end. It's also a pretty decent juggling tool when you have Denjin up, Problem is that you have to give up on pressure if you want that charge and it's not necessarily a great deal for Ryu.

Ken is stupidly strong in this game. If YOLO Ken was a thing in SF6, Capcom up to eleven with his SF6 version. I literally don't know do I even get turn against.

The divide between Ken and Ryu is almost as bad as it was in 3rd Strike. But at least 3rd Strike Ryu had really fun unblockable setups that were unique to him. In SF6 he doesn't even get that.
