Do you need to pay to play online?

Sorry guys, I just don't get it.
I play the game on PS5. I got Capcom ID and all that rubbish. First time I tried to play online vs random people in battle hub and fighting ground, I got a pop-up message inviting me to subscribe with a monthly fee, with 3 different plans?

Couple of days later I tried again and I was able to start an online message without any monthly fee messages thrown at my face. Yesterday, trying to participate in online fight again, and again this pop up urges me to pay monthly fee before I could do PvP.
Can someone explain what is the business model here?

There is mandatory subscription for online play on all games on PS5.

This is one of the biggest reasons to get PC btw. The few games that have a subscription fee are MMOs like WoW and FFXIV, and since I don't play either I can't think of a single online game I've played in the last decade that asked me to pay an additional fee for the game I've purchased.
