Hopefully, some of the future stories / maps will revert to this format. There definitely need to be more of a balanced mix between small, medium and large stories & maps.
I learned far more firing up Skirmish and setting up my own battles, then learning the units and the mechanics while I controlled the general aspects of what I was playing. Getting pummeled on a map is not a good feeling for new players and it causes snap judgments and helps fuel unfair snap reviews.
Don't get me wrong the Stories are great and loads of fun. I just don't think it is a good place to start learning. Tutorial then Skirmish then when you can win a game of your own design you are ready to be thrown to the wolves.
Problem is, most of the Stories are big lumbering monsters and I think if newcomers jump straight into them they might be put off Troop for life, whereas all the scens in my OP are small fast 20-turners and can usually be played in less than an hour..:)

As far as the stories being big lumbering monsters I agree that isn't an optimal place to start either even the shorter stories though are restrictive and the game is in control of the parameters. I think controlling this yourself is more conducive to learning,.
