Can't open in-game menu through Escape

I want to save and exit but escape won't open the menu. Not much else to add. There are no popup windows (such as houses or jobs) open for it to get confused on either. It closes those popups when I open them. But main menu, nope.

Couldn't find a way to solve it.
But pro tip to anyone who doesn't want to lose their progress:

1. Click on the settings button on your little mnu at the bottom.
2. Gameplay > Set autosave frequency to 5 minutes.
3. Pause the game for 5 minutes.
4. Autosave happens, then Alt-F4.
5. Load Auto-save, create manual save.
