Lords of the Realm 2
Anyone else play Lords of the Realm 2 back in the day? Manor Lords, to me, very much feels like and reminds me of Lords of the Realm 2.

I loved that game back in the day, and still play it every now and again just because I find it so much fun and nostalgic; so I think that's why I like Manor Lords so much is it seems to be a more modern version of that game.

I understand that Lords of the Realm 2 is a turn-based game, but this game you can pause anytime you want, so it kind of plays a lot like a turn-based game. They both have a map divided up into counties. They both have different resources in those counties. You build up population and weapons and go take other counties. Remove the AI and you win 'the map'.

Now again, I'm not saying this is a bad thing or passing any judgement here. I'm merely just making an observation. And I love Lords of the Realm 2, so the more updates come in that make it more like that game, the better! Examples being maybe:

1. More uses for Stone? - like building bigger castle elements. I realize stone walls and things like that is a little unrealistic to expect peasants to build in this small a timeframe, but hey, its a game.

2. Cattle? Not sure if adding cattle is in the road map for the developer, but seems like a natural thing to have. One element that was really fun in Lords of the Realm 2 was playing with differences between towns that focused on farming wheat and towns that focused on tending to cattle herds. Also, your people could subsist on dairy from the cattle if there was enough - or if not, then you might have to eat some of the cattle. Could be fun game elements for this game. Although, I think a lot of that is probably already covered with things like Vegetables, Apples, Honey, Eggs, etc...

3. Small siege engines? - If the castle building part gets developed a lot more, could be fun to have small siege engines like a battering ram that you could build. Although, obviously for this you'd need the AI to build on the map. But, I think I remember hearing that is definitely on the road map, for the AI to eventually build on the map.

Anyway, I'll stop there. Just some interesting thoughts I was having.

it's manor lord, not castle lord I guess.

Lords of the Realm 2 was awesome, later on the first stronghold was even better.

Now I remember the cows, dairy products and beef, should I eat the cows now or starve later on to death.

Really loved the mechanics and the artstyle.

Yes, it's one of my fave old games. :)

This game has elements that remind me of it, Stronghold, and the visuals and animations of modern indie city builders. The city building aspect is (so far) rather simplistic, which imo fits with the RTS element merging - eg, maybe one wouldn't want too much city building complexity if one is also dealing with the RTS elements.

This can make the city-building/no combat sandbox mode feel less challenging or deep, if that's what one was hoping for. But I like it - it's more chill, I can control when population/town grows vs. feeling forced to always grow *right now* because I can't control population growth. Heh.

I agree stone needs more use - about the only reason I use it is multiple granaries. Maybe there could eventually be a level 4 house, or one could have Lvl3 houses require 1 stone perhaps.

hell of a name drop. Haven't played that in ages but had so much fun making armies and town building in that

I've brought this up a few times. This feels like the predecessor to lord of the realms 2 with 2024 capabilities.
One of the things that made lord of the realms so great and gave me and my friends years of fun was that it was multiplayer. Manor Lords lacks that so I'm afraid for it's longevity.
I definitely played Lords2. I still play to this day (someone made a mod of Lords2 not long ago and reversed engineered the darn thing. Little wonky, but it brought new gameplay). Manor Lords (ML) definitely share the same feel of Lords2. But ML is a very granular micro managing game play because you are a lord who manages his or hers land. What Lords2 had was the simple nostalgic visuals of the 90s, the music (which really paved your imagination of what it may have been like in medieval times) and the simple management of economy. Lords2 is the epitome of 90s strategy games. Lords2 was not as granular. It focused on expansion and it was the same story line over and over but it felt great to see a new map. ML focuses more on economic growth at a granular level. What ML is missing is while it is middle ages themed, I still don't get that "medieval feel" like I did for Lords2. I have a soft spot for Lords2 and I know that is a familiar game I was used to and its not fair to compare Manor Lords to Lords2. Other's may not see the way we do because we played Lords2. It would be great to see in Manor Lords 2 some Lords2 feel type of background tunes, see the iron mine come alive, cow bonanza (minus the strange disease) and forging some alliance with some benefits (not friends with benefits). I hope they make Manor Lords mod-capable. I would hop on creating one inspired by Lords2.

I used to play Lords of the Realm 2. It's still one of my favorite games to this day, and I joke that the reason you can't use wasd to scroll around the map was because the game's so old that those four letters hadn't been invented yet. For those who still want to play it though, there is a version of the game available on both Steam and GOG.

On a side note in regards to cattle, while I don't know if cows will eventually be added to the game, you can get sheep and oxen, although you can't really eat either of them yet, which you would think would be an option for sheep once you have enough sheep. Although maybe you can, it's been a while since I played Manor Lords, and I usually have some sort of critical resource failure causing my settlement to collapse long before I get around to playing with a large flock of sheep.
You an eat sheep. And you can eat lambs. You just need a butcher artisan backyard extension.

As for oxen, maybe they could give oxen a lifespan when you buy them, and an ox would drop dead in it's tracks when it hit that limit. Then, if you had a butcher . . .

You know that in real life, if an ox dropped dead, Wamba and Gurth would have daggers out and be all over that thing while it was still warm.

Love Lord of the Realms 2, have it on Steam, still play it. It was Lords of the Realm 2 and Diablo back in 1997 I think. Great year.
Hell Yeah brother that game was sweet
