The dev has made it crystal clear that he's not going to work on any form of MP, but that he may revisit that decision when the game has left early access. Until that time he has requested that folks stop asking about/for it (in his FAQ).
To play mp all players would need to own the game. So mp is a nil return on investment project.
Taking Civ4 Colonization as an example, the data that the game engine uses is held in editable text files. 3D objects can altered. etc. Civ4Col supports MP but since initial release almost all the interest has been in adding new features to the game and making better map generators.
This game needs multiplayer like a lamprey needs a bicycle.
But the little multiplayer fanbois come asking every couple of days.
And the answer is the same as it has been since this game released into Early Access:
