No Command units
I understand that their won't be any command units and your Baron won't be able to participate in battle.

The question remains, who leads the retinue? Or is it just a level of suspension of disbelief as to the players ability to issue instantaneous orders, seemingly by magic?

Implying the first half is incorrect and there are plans to add command units?
No. There are no plans, its explicitly mentioned in the FAQ.

A developer of this app has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Your initial comment was strangely worded, and confusing.

Also how exactly was my question answered?

Sorry, my brain's a bit scattered over the last few days since I've been answering so much so I might be a bit off with my wording once in a while. Anyways the question is answered because like I said, the game's FAQ on the Discord explicitly answers your question, and the answer is, that there will be no command units or single units in general. So yes, your military just knows what to do magically.

I have hired witches... to tell the orders to my men while they fight.

We could, I suppose, argue that we're sending riders out to give the orders. But personally, I like to assume the retinue is commanded by the best of the men and when you give orders as a player, it's functionally that top man giving the orders. Alternatively that we're there in battle to give orders, but are "untouchable" since lords tended to... not be touched.

I like your idea with the retinue, and its pretty true, they are in fact the best men. Buuut... what if you only fight with militia and no retinue, kinda falls apart.

True. I suppose in that case I'd assume each militia unit sort of elects a leader by default. Maybe the oldest guy or the guy with the biggest stones?
