Beating the baron is easy as long as you don't have him set to aggressive. You can take all the time you want then to build up your army. Doesn't matter if he takes all the other regions, you can slowly kick him out anyway.
As for getting to the bandits before the baron there are a couple of ways of dealing with it.
You should definitely have the free shipment of weapons available by the time the first bandit camp spawns and probably the 5 person retinue that comes with the manor.
One option is you simply beat the baron to the bandits, which you can usually do if you react as soon as the bandit camp appears. Spawn your troops and walk (don't run) to the bandit camp. Its rare that he will get there before you. If he will get there faster then option 2 comes into play (which you can do regardless if you want).
Option 2 is ignore the bandits, get close, but not close enough so they attack. Wait for the baron to engage them, then run around them and claim the bandit camp. Its the bandit camp that is important, not the kills. If you do that, you deny the baron the coin and influence.
I just want to get the “Beat the baron” achievement that’s all.
Yeah I try get there before him but my 10 guys get killed even if they have upper hand.
Should I be building my keep and getting my retinue before the first camp appears?
So it doesn’t really matter if he takes all the land I can just fight him for it later after he attacks me?
Its a good idea to get your manor up before the first bandit camp spawns as it gives you 5 retinue you can take along to fight the bandits with.
And if you have a passive baron, he will never attack you, so you just build up and take the regions he has claimed off him one by one, when you have a big enough army to do so.
Note, the baron will hire all the mercs except one in game if you don't stop him by hiring them first, so you usually want a max sized army before going taking regions off him.
Note, if you beat him to all bandit camps you can really slow him down from expanding as well.
Yeah I get 20 spears but my population has grown extremely slow every time for some reason.
Have all the houses, foods, supplies but the baron has already gotten two lands and attacked the first camp before I can get to 20.
Maybe I’m not starting strong enough but I feel like I expand very quickly I just don’t get the population coming so I’m struggling to get to the camps before him.
I will try build my manor up faster and see if that helps and turn down the difficulty.
Can I still get the achievements on the lower difficulty?
They absoloutely can leave their region.
Its one way of getting a really nice army to take on the baron's final region. A fully upgraded unit of max size retinue from all your regions makes an almost unbeatable army.
