I thought so too, but the industry required to build your own 'army' takes a lot of plots, development points and resources. The point of the game is to defeat the Baron, and you can do that with mercenaries. So, you just need a lot of treasury. Selling helmets for example takes away two development points that could be more usefull someplace else.
I caught one like that because I was testing to see whether the new character portraits were animated to a walk-around (they are not), so it just came up first shot. I kept it, fiddled with it some, and I apparently moved on to something else and deleted it.
So when you get it, save it so you can re-use it.
(Personally, I think lampreys would have been better than berries. That's probably why I ditched it.)
you are not wrong with helmets and mail i usualy trade that or have just one town for that
but since you get salt you go into deep mining anyway and with iron you got soo many stuff to export and not destroy market value in my opinion
salt + sausage if you go into that + charcoal
iron, slab, tools, spear sword even polearm to trade + charcoal
That depends. What difficulty setting, what scenario and what starting conditions would you like?
I have plenty of standard "Restoring the peace" scenario starts saved.... also some with easier starting conditions such as double resources, 3 years till raiders arrive, no underground water necessary for wells, reactive baron AI, etc.
EDIT:
I just made a few new start saves in Nusslohe:
1. Start with Rich Fishpond & Farmland
2. Start with Rich Clay & Iron
3. Start with Rich Clay & Salt
4. Start with Rich Deer Herd & Farmland
2nd EDIT:
Got a starting savegame in Eichenhau for you:
"Restoring the peace" scenario with average baron AI, average raids, double starting ressources, free well placement.
Rich salt deposit, rich farming soil, small berry bushes patch.

Download all three files, put them in your manor lords savegames folder. Try if the savegame appears in your load menu in game... maybe it works?!
I only change 1 thing in a scenario and that's unconstrained well placement. And I only play scenarios with the baron.
In the meantime I also managed to spawn a region (Immenreuth) with a rich salt deposit, fertile land, berries and deer.
My 'holy grail' of region would be (if that exists at all): Nusslohe, fertile land, rich salt, rich deer, berries.
For the moment I prefer salt over iron because salt adds a source of food. My peasants don't need armor, they can die gloriously for their lord
Since you don't start with iron as a resource, your peasants can only become archers anyway, and archers don't need armor. You can hire the "Ravenous Vultures" or "Battle Brothers" as frontline troops and let your militia rain arrows on approaching enemies.
