This is a GREAT REPLY! I can also confirm that family being sent to war during harvest is a BAD idea; some of the family was not there to help gather and it was a tough winter! This was an incredible surprise in the game mechanically but was a serious problem for the feudal system and war in the ancient times.
Men were only allowed to be gone and serving their Lord during the Summer (or 40 days) so they could harvest in Autumn and sow in the Spring. I just loved the fact that I failed to realize this real issue and suffered for it. Good news though, I raided a Bandit camp and got enough gold to buy a settlement camp...
