Also, it would seem that gamespeed does affect performance, at least currently. So if you're reaching the point where fps drops are happening etc, no more 12x, then no more 4x, then only 1x. heh.
Like, what's the max pops you have ever seen?
But at that amount it hasn't been any performance issue at all. Based on some reddit post I saw I'd guess 1x-only point for my specs might be around 2k-3k. Although I'd guess it would also depend a bit on resolution.

Game is on a 4k LG OLED but using DLSS/Quality so not native, most settings Ultra, some on High. Stable 60+ at 12x up to that 800ish.
I had 1k or so in the 'main' village, then every region with at least 500, excepting the two the baron owned. Didn't see any kind of slowdown, but I cap at 60fps anyways... And I have the older brother, yet oddly faster at 2.7Ghz i27000. And only a 3070Ti laptop, and an amazing 16gb of ram, heh.
My only problem with that amount of pops is I'd get a hiccup every now and then from the ram being all taken and shuffled around, on the highest speed.
The other thing is that I don't know if the game performance is more affected/weighted by *single* region/town's high population (when you are actually within/staring it) or the entire map/total population for all regions. It could also be that total map population would weigh more against battles/combat for some reason, vs. only staring at a busy town center.
That reddit thread was about 3k+ single-town/region size and it was down to 1x.
That said, still no performance drop for me, but I wasn't expecting one. What I have noticed tho, is that the auto-save takes a bit longer/lags the game for a second, where it didn't really before. Also, the larger the save, the longer loading the save initially takes. Nothing huge, but it's noticeable. Yes I'm on an SSD.
But to the OP, the other thread I saw mentioned having an fps drop at only 300 population. They didn't list their specs tho, only that they were above "recommended." The intel CPU for recommended is actually relatively low (or reasonable, depending on how one looks at it). I don't think it's even made/for sale anymore.
