What possible benefit is the King's Tax anyway?
Without an incentive who'd want it other than to farm an achievement if there is such a thing for it?

I'd switch it off if, there is no benefit or pay off for such a large expenditure that debilitates your game play.

Enjoy much more flexible play style choices than suffer getting bored doing the same thing over and over again to deal with such an anchor to the game.

If you do not benefit from paying it in some way, like the Crown's Protection say, or a new Tech Tree that you can access, it is a pointless hamstring for sadists.

Switch it off, play how you want to play.

Also the same goes for the exponential costs of Trade Routes. What logic formed that idea?
No real world historical equivalent other than a blunt attempt to money sink something that could be creatively done in many other ways more subtle.

If I had an option to switch it off back to the the first incarnation of how it was priced I would.

This should be a modest maintenance cost you pay over time for the use of the route and abstracted logistics costs for the adventure to sell and buy elsewhere. This would encourage you to make regular use of the route too as once you select it, it is a permanent choice to encourage you to think carefully what you want to buy and sell.

It's a drain/money sink so people don't build ridiculous amounts of money with nothing to spend it on. I've actually found it balancing my current game, one settlement at full capacity while I'm building my second settlement. The dev was nice enough to give you a way to switch it off if you don't like it. I agree with the trade route costs... seems like it went from 0 to 100 real quick, but that's why it's a beta branch, meant for testing and feedback.

Yes a money sink with no pay off other than for those who want a 'challenge'. All I see is no intrinsic benefit for it other than that. It severely limits game play choices without any tangible benefit as I stated. At least we agree on the Trade Route.

What benefit? I mean, other then for the Kings pockets, which is kinda historically accurate?
Having the 'full' experience. As it stands, it will most likely be toned down some by the time the patch finally gets here, for sure.
That and you need default settings for achievements, so there is that...
But if you just want to play, and don't want to deal with it when it finally is a thing?

Then don't. If you want the extra challenge is why it exists. It's literally why EVERY option possible in the settings for a new game exist.

Same with trade routes. It will most likely be balanced out by the time the patch actually drops, but...again, it's to keep the rather unrealistic situation of 'We export the world from our small village' being a thing, plus kind of pushes you to diversify regions and ship things around between them. It's a game play mechanic, that when tuned, will keep people from exploiting 'sell the world' to fill the regional coffers, and to give them a reason to expand into other regions.

Yeah i switched off kings tax but as im starting a new game im not looking forward to the new trade costs from what ive read sofar, greg's jumping far to high to bat down inconsistencies in the game and wants to take a more step by step approach to the mechanics of the game, still loving it,so much to experiment with sofar, looking forward to fighting the AI properly.

Indeed. The exponential growth of cost is hilarious beyond a doubt. And for sure achieves what seems to be the goal. But, dear lord...Step up, not exponential up, hah.

What I am getting at is that as it stands it is only for adding a malus and there is an opportunity for it to be much more than that. So yes it only exists to hamstring you if you like that kind of thing and the Dev is probably going to miss a very significant trick with this pony as it has the potential to do much, much more.

Anyway hopefully in time the Dev will see that and understand that potential. This is a slow burner of a development any way so they have time to get it tuned nicely.

There already IS a framework in for the Kings Tax. Kings Favor. Which you can use. It actually already says that in game in a number of places connected with that tax ;)

It's how it worked - the king owns all the land and allocates it to trusted noblemen. They get to keep all the proceeds from working the land and have to pay a tax to the king or send armed troops to battle when called upon. If a lord/nobleman refuses to pay the tax the lord will be deemed disloyal to the king so he will send an army to depose the lord and give the lands to a loyal lord instead or appoint a new one. Your incentive as a lord to pay the kings tax is to stay alive and in power of the lands granted to you
