by then you should have atleast a few level two homes, dont build farms or chickens, in all of your homes before level two so it can still be developed and build a smithy. then just make spears, also make a joiner, for shields, go on the building advanced and chose the right thing, for each spears need big shields i think, side arms or swords need a small shield. they way you can keep the troops coming !!! then when your stable hire and upgrade your retainers. they are very effective ounce they have armor and 24 units. dont waste time on archers till update. make sure if you only have small amount of ore, make sure you dont make a tool maker and use it all up save it for spears 113 ore is 113 sprears or 56 swords should be easy killing bandits to get a new territory with high ore, must have if you plan on making war!
And having discovered this exploit that's exactly what I'm doing too. Which I think is where the problem lies. Indeed I've been a little bit restrained as so far I've always fed the Bandit Rewards into my Treasury. So, it's more than paid for my Retinue and given me the silver for a large Mercenary Army, but I've resisted pumping any of the rewards into Region Wealth which has meant that I've had to work to improve my settlement.
When you don't pump Bandit Gold into your Regional Wealth you realise just how much harder the game is without that exploit. Which is why I think it should be nerfed.
This made me lol
It is even much easier than that. By year two you should have plundered your first bandit camp. Put the money in your treasury, and once raiders are close to invading, buy a group of light infantry mercenaries to repel them. You can easily afford it from just one plundered bandit camp.
If you play on the beta branch with the king's tax active, that might not be an option, as you need your treasury money to pay the king, but the king's tax can be deactivated in game settings before starting a game. First raid can also be delayed into the third year.
If you want to play standard settings in a "restoring the peace" scenario, though, I kinda agree with this one:
If you want peaceful mode, there is a peaceful mode.
I was initially wary of the these and concerned that I would have the strength to deal with them. But basically they are not worth worrying about as your initial 20 x Spear Militia can easily destroy a Bandit Camp and after that they just become a source of huge amounts of free silver.
That will more than pay for the raising of a fully armoured Retinue of 12 x Men At Arms and I managed to hire three units of mercenaries before the first attack by the raiders. Thatwas just a farce as they only came with 18 x Raiders against my army of 72 x Mercenary Archers, 72 x Mercenary Warriors, 12 x Retinue and 22 x Militia Spearmen. It was hardly even a battle more like a massacre.

Now I understand why everyone bothers to build a second Manor House on their first claimed Region. I didn't even bother when playing 'Rise to Prosperity' as the Tax Revenue you can charge isn't that high and the buildings are expensive. But of course the real reason everyone does so is that in 'Restoring the Peace' doing so unlocks yet another detachment of veteran retainers. So, every Manor House allows you to raise another units of 24 x Professional Men At Arms, which explains some of the videos I've been watching on YouTube.

All of which can easily be paid for with Bandit Gold once you realise they are useless. They are totally overpowering the game and making it way too easy.
Hire proffesionals...
