This. Efficiency matters. Also, incorporate more farmhouses and invest in the ox plowing perk. More farmhouses = more ox available to plow and help carry the loads to where they go. You will also notice that even when a zone of farm land shows "+++" meaning it's "great" farmland, you will almost never find said land over 65% fertility. With that being said, I feel like the pasture fertilization perk is rather important.. but I've heard it's bugged at the moment.
So basically, farming is not as full fledged as it will be when the game is finished. I'll give you that, but you can still make them plenty feasible with strategically placed buildings, more farmhouses, and more oxen.
Also, don't forget to rotate your crops!
Growing wheat and making bread is more mid-game IMO. Once you establish better population and require the T3 homes, bread is a good option to boost your food variety. You can just completely skip it and import all food too by the way.
That said, people above have already told you how to optimize your work-flow. Don't bring grain to the Grainery (oxy-moronic I know) but completely skip it and go straight to the mill. Also make sure you are setting your fields priorities correctly. For example, If you have three fields, one should be fallow, and two should be set to grow, and one of those two fields should be set to a higher priority so that it gets done faster.
Farming is a very large time-investment with low early returns but the long-game returns are well worth it.
Make sure that if you enable the advanced plows, that you have enough Oxen to support your fields. One Ox will not be enough.
