Praying instead of working the Vegetable garden...
Getting kinda fed up with this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.
* I have a burgage plot with 2 houses and a vegetable garden.
* Both houses have 2 families, 3 members each, so 6 people total.
* I leave them unassigned, hoping that they will all plow and sow
* But in practice, they will help out constructing buildings
* If they're not constructing buildings, then at least 1 member of each family just gets the status "waiting" or "praying". Which means 2 out of 6 members not plowing and sowing
* I also tried assigning both families to the sawmill, since that only uses one person to saw wood. It still has the result that 1 member of each family is not plowing and sowing (I don't even remember WTF else they're doing, not plowing and sowing anyway!)

So whatever I try, I can only get 4 out of 6 people to plow and sow.

Any advice on how to get more of them to plow and sow? Even 5 out of 6 would be a major win at this point :(

The more you're building the less time they have to harvest in their own gardens, it's kind of obvious. Let them pray.

Villagers have needs. These take priority over any tasks you assign them.

Unassigned families will work their vegatable gardens if they don't have other things to take care of. Assigned families will also work their gardens, but will generally have less time to do so.

What I found out so far is that there is very often a certain time when things are getting done or not. Foi instance my foragers waited the whole winter at home before they started planting trees. The same is with working on the field noone does anything from dez -feb. So maybe you should wait a year until autumn, which is usaully the time of harvest.

Assigned families don't all work their gardens, one member will always stay praying or just sit at home doing nothing. For example, I assigned one family to the sawpit. There are no logs in the sawpit, so nothing to do over there. But only 2 out of the 3 family members go plowing the land, the 3rd member goes and sits at home "waiting". I'm not constructing anything either. So there's nothing to construct and there is nothing to do at the sawpit, so he should plow the f-in field instead of sitting at home waiting and doing nothing. It's f-in frustrating and makes no sense. He could plow the field and "wait" while doing that, until there is wood available to saw at the sawpit.

...How big is your vegetable garden?!?
I mean, I've got ones about 3x the size of the lumberjack place... And 1 unassigned person gets that all done...
Maybe make them a bit smaller?
And...how much construction are you doing? It seems like epic amounts... Try building things during winter, when people don't have anything to do.

There are so many things... Pictures would help. Because you are having a problem that really, really shouldn't be any kind of a problem.

Maybe a freak bug.

The garden is relatively big, exactly 1 Morgen. And I built it right at the start of the game, so work on the garden only started in April.
I guess the garden is gonna harvest whatever amount got sowed, right? Or is it an all or nothing situation, where you need to sow 100% of the garden otherwise you're not getting anything from it?

It's all or nothing. The plots shouldn't be that big after what I've gathered.
It takes too much time for the family to work.

Maybe they're cousins and their grandparent just died.

Your serfs, regardless of what you assign, will always retrieve water, pray (if there's a church), and randomly travel around the region. But they're serfs-- not slaves. They'll also make dumb decisions to walk 1 unit of __ to the other side of the map, more frequently if you haven't adequately staffed your storehouse or granary.

As for what I do-- I micro my gardeners to have more seasonal type jobs that don't much conflict-- usually as foragers, hunters, and woodcutters. Likewise I screw around with a small marketplace (3-4 stalls), destroy extra stalls, and ensure that my storehouses & granaries have priority (as they'll then supply firewood, clothing, & food from nearby while the rest of their families and any others I assign to help will focus on the rest of the logistics).

Ughh, guess I will have to restart my game then :(
Which I probably didn't have to, if only my 6 family members would all sow and plow their f-n garden instead of being useless, waiting at home or praying... They're just as stupid as real life people... I hate people...

I was looking for an older post for you to read about this topic, but I couldn't find it among all the threads. I guess it was pushed out at the end. Unfortuantely.

Ah, too bad! If you happen to find it after all, please share :)
