Is there any reason to disband retinue?
Any reason not to just keep them out and about forever?
Just curious...

you can only customize them when disbanded

Why would you keep them as a standing unit? When you call to rally, they are out of their barracks anyway, and they are way too few to be able to stand against any enemy force on their own anyway.

Ah, most of my army spawns at the top of the map, so I was thinking maybe I could have retinue stand in the middle of the map instead. In case the bottom region gets attacked by bandits, then I could team them up with the other retinue and some mercs. While we wait for reinforcements to arrive.

but you could keep them fresh and ready as first responders. its an interesting idea
biggest problem I've had with invaders so far is when they pop out of the woods and my militia have to run to meet them, resulting in exhaustion and a huge drop in effectiveness
and retinue with their heavy armour are always the most affected

Against bandits?
Because against the AI Lord you usually just go the battle location because otherwise you have to fight multiple waves of enemies.
You can let the enemy run through your town, it's not harming you in a significant way.

They quite often come out of their barracks with zero stamina for some reason, meaning you have to wait quite a lot until they reach full effectiveness

Maybe they got exhausted by putting on all the plate armor very quick. ^^

i recommend sending them to guard a new region that you've just started to develop. because there are no more countdowns after the very first raider attack on your starting region. raiders can just drop in, set everything on fire and leave before your militia gets there. then you will get the permanent homelessness bug

this isn't california
I'm not just going to let invaders loot my town without offering resistance
Yeah..... that's not how the game works at all, chief. Unless you challenge a region or declare war, the AI lord leaves you alone.

I keep my retinue stationed at my weakest settlement. This is usually where raiders attack first.

I feel bad for one of my retinues, they are freezing in the street. After having resored peace and won all regions i didn't see the point of keeping 24 soldiers, especiially in that region that was goig to starve to death (I had made the mistake to engage in battle for the the Barons last region during the harvest season so all men were out if town and the granary empying). Anyway, after the final victory this town was starving and I badlky needed to get rid of these soldiers so I sent them on a wild gooschase to a neighboring region and then tore down the manor. Then brought them back and disbanded them. They all stayed! standing by the marketplace freezing! So after a while when thing were better, I rebuilt the manor but they won't move in! Winter after winter they stay on the streets... Oh, what am I going to do?

I was under the impression that both militia and retinue will starve if left out in the world unlike mercenaries, am I wrong?

yes.

It is possible to fight off 4 bandits with a fully upgraded retinue, though.

I wish militia wasn't capped, though.
It would make more sense if we could have as much militia in every region as we could.
Jabberwocky Nov 22, 2024 @ 9:00am
Every region can already house 1 militia + 1 retinue each, which is more than enough to fight off any raid. And we've already enough militia and retinue available to defeat the baron even without using any mercenaries.

So yeah... more soldiers would be nice... but what for? We'd need much harder opponents first, otherwise it's really overkill.

Hmmm been a while but I do remember getting a "your people are starving" message and when following up it was a militia unit that was starving and as soon as i disbanded the message went away. I will have to do more research....perhaps another 600 hours...... always learning new things.
