Too bad they spawn on the other side of the map every time and have no chance of reaching the battle on time

nothing more important than population growth, u dont have to push uptier if u can maintain 75% approval

I too was attacked by 3 groups of 18 bandits and the militia was destoryed easily. I didn't have enough funding for mercs, so I had to say goodbye to my thriving village. I've turned bandit raids off in my next playthrough as I'm still learning the game. Getting steamrolled every three years by bandits is not my idea of fun.

Perhaps later, when I have the hang of things, I'll turn it on again. But for now it's a bit too much and overkill early on (for me at least).

It was Year 3ish, i was trying to get food and trade up, just starting making weapons, no funds in treasury. next play through ill focus more on specialization and army

You should early on proactively push to get to tier 2 and make some weapons so you can arm more militia groups. You have plenty of time for it.

The only time i had a bandit raid was 1 band of 18 men which was around 2 or 3 years in and they were killed on the way to my base. It wouldn't matter much anyway as i've been fighting the baron and have almost 130 men.

I suppose u playin like my friend that get easily overwhelm with managing town and kept busy failing to manage the town to the point not even thought about sending at least 20 guy to clear out bandit for ez money and camp. I told him soo but his kept saying busy building town like dont care bout those message mention bandit sighted etc.
You should do it til u grind enough point to claim land/hire least 16 knight or let rival lord do it since bandit wont spawn there. Once they dont have camp anymore they wont rob and spawn newer wave to u in loooong time til raider event

The 4x18 bandits is the "raid".
Can be defeated with one full (36) spear, one full archer, and a handful of retinue or second spear group.
Once you've engaged melee, move your archers to flank them and set to fire at will. They won't shoot 'through' your units in melee but they'll shoot the enemy in the back.

Oh, and spearment want stand your ground stance. always.

For those who haven't progressed too far into the game and want to know how the middle option (Default) works.

-1st Wave [Feb Year 2]: (2) Groups of 16 Melee Bandits.
-2nd wave [5th Year]: (4) Groups of 18 Melee Bandits (if you have more than 1 Region, they may split and go to each Manor).
-They'll continue every ~3 yrs after.

If you have a Manor, they go straight for it instead of your Town. You can EASILY have a Manor built before the very 1st attack which gives you (5) Retinue along with whatever number of Militia you have.

You can also EASILY have (2) Militia Groups before the 1st wave if you use the backyard Extension for the Fletcher as example (yes, I know Archers sucks at this time, but they'll get fixed in the 1st Patch). Giving you usually about (13) Spearmen + (13) Archers + (5) Retinue for that initial attack. This is if you chose Spearmen for your 1st Militia (which you should).

The 2nd wave is even easier to deal with. You should take the Militia AFTER the initial attack out to other Counties and deal with Bandit Camps for Treasury funds. This allows you to hire additional Retinue at 50g each. By the 2nd attack (5 Years) you should EASILY have (~30) Spearmen + (~30) Archers + (~10+ Retinue) and maybe an additional (5) Retinue from a 2nd Region with smaller Militia from them, say (~15) of each.

Didn't have your retinue yet? Sounds like you neglected that part of the game a bit.
