There are still a lot of things where I think I kinda get it but I still don't have hard tests of.
Like, I've seen 60% wheat fertility, I've seen a community helper say 60% is the cap, but I've never used fertilization, and I've never seen a field start with more then like, mid fifty.
So either my fallow year got it to 60%, I didn't notice a 60% field as I placed it and planned a 3 year crop rotation, or the wiki's claims that the starting fertility can never be beaten might be a bit loose.
Since the wiki says fertility shouldn't be able to go above starting no matter how hard you fertilize. I've seen things that seem contradictory, but I've also seen hooded horse employees contradict community helpers and wiki editors on narrow mechanics like this (Like what market stall types families can do,) or get corrected by players who were doing something they said was impossible.
There is enough chaos that I can say, until i get a day free to just do farming tests, I can't say for sure.
From the Game Wiki and FAQ
- All crops reduce Fertility, which can be combated by rotating crops or growing Fallow for a year.
- With the Fertilization development branch it can be upgraded with a fence for 5 Planks, which improves Fallow crop.
- There is a known issue where estimated crop yields in the month of September are inaccurate, so you won’t harvest as much as the game tells you you will.
- The fertility rating of a field at game start is the maximum fertility level that field will ever have. It will decrease over time, however you can use strategies such as leaving a field Fallow for a season and general crop rotation or using the development option to allow farm animals to use fallow fields, to regenerate fertility rating back to its starting maximum.
